For a steep yard, start with the steepest section of grass—not the total lawn size or the longest feature list.
YardFit quick path: ¼ acre · ½ acre · 1 acre · steep slopes · trees & shade
This guide compares manufacturer-published slope ratings and navigation characteristics. It is a specification-based buying guide, not a hands-on durability test. Real-world traction can vary with wet grass, loose soil, holes, roots and the direction of travel.
Quick comparison
| Model family | Published max slope | Drive | Navigation / boundary approach | Best starting fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Segway Navimow X4 | 84% (40°) | 4WD | Network RTK + vision; wire-free | Very steep, complex terrain where maximum published slope headroom matters |
| Mammotion LUBA AWD family | 80% (38.6°) | AWD | Varies by generation; current family includes RTK/vision and newer LiDAR combinations | Steep terrain with multiple lawn-size options |
| Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD NERA | 70% (35°) | AWD | Virtual or physical boundary options | Steep lawns where established Automower features and flexible boundary setup matter |
Important: These are manufacturer-published maximum ratings, not independently measured YardFit Mower test results. Do not choose a mower solely because its maximum number is higher.
Segway publishes a maximum incline of 84% (40°) for the Navimow X4 and describes it as a four-wheel-drive platform. Its current product information also describes Network RTK, vision-based sensing and antenna-free setup. Segway notes that its slope testing was performed under specified test conditions, so the headline rating should be treated as a limit rather than a promise for every lawn surface.
2. Mammotion LUBA: strong AWD slope rating with several size classes
Mammotion publishes an 80% (38.6°) maximum climbing ability across its LUBA AWD family. Current LUBA generations span different lawn sizes and navigation combinations, so model identity matters: do not assume every LUBA has the same positioning hardware simply because the AWD slope rating is shared.
3. Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD NERA: 70% slope capability
Husqvarna specifies up to 70% (35°) slope capability in the working area for the Automower 435X AWD NERA. Husqvarna also distinguishes the maximum slope in the work area from boundary-related limits, an important reminder that mower placement and installation rules can be more restrictive than the headline climbing figure.

How steep is your lawn?
Slope percentage and degrees are different measurements. A 100% grade equals 45°. Before shopping, measure the steepest section the mower must actually traverse. Leave margin below a manufacturer’s maximum rather than designing the entire installation around the limit.
Slope rating is only the first filter
- Surface: wet turf, loose soil and exposed roots can reduce usable traction.
- Boundary location: some manufacturers publish lower limits near boundaries than inside the work area.
- Navigation: trees and buildings can change which positioning system is the better fit.
- Passages and zones: confirm the mower can reach every mowing area, not just climb the hill.
- Lawn area: slope capability does not compensate for insufficient area capacity.
Which one should you shortlist?
If your measured requirement approaches 70% or more, start by comparing the AWD/4WD models whose official ratings clear that requirement with useful margin. For less extreme hills, do not automatically pay for the largest slope number: navigation fit, lawn area, service options and installation constraints may matter more.
