RTK vs LiDAR vs Vision Robot Mowers
Wire-free robot lawn mowers can use several navigation technologies. The label alone does not tell you which mower will work best in your yard; the surrounding environment matters.
RTK
RTK systems use satellite positioning with correction data to improve positioning accuracy. When evaluating an RTK mower, consider sky visibility, nearby buildings and trees, installation requirements and how the mower behaves when positioning quality is reduced.
LiDAR
LiDAR systems map surrounding geometry using laser-based sensing. They can reduce dependence on satellite visibility, but implementation differs by model. Mapping, localization, obstacle handling and recovery behavior should be evaluated separately.
Vision
Vision systems use cameras to interpret boundaries, obstacles or landmarks. Performance can depend on the mower’s hardware, software and the visual conditions in the yard, so the word “vision” should not be treated as a performance guarantee.
Hybrid Systems
Some mowers combine positioning and sensing methods. For any hybrid system, we record the individual technologies and evaluate the product against the yard requirement rather than assuming that more sensors automatically mean better fit.
What to Compare
- Open sky versus trees and nearby buildings
- Boundary setup requirements
- Multi-zone support
- Narrow passages
- Slope capability
- Obstacle handling
- Recovery when positioning is degraded
