Choose capacity from the amount of grass the mower must maintain, then add terrain and scheduling constraints. Do not buy from lot size alone.
Step 1: Measure mowable lawn area
Subtract the house, driveway, patio, permanent beds, pool and other non-grass areas. If the lawn is split into zones, record both the total mowable area and the size of each zone.
Step 2: Do not treat the maximum rating as your target
A manufacturer’s area rating is a screening number, not a guarantee that every property at that size will behave the same. Slopes, narrow transfers, obstacles, grass growth and allowed mowing hours can all reduce practical headroom.
Step 3: Check the steepest section separately
Area capacity and slope capability solve different problems. A mower can have enough theoretical acreage capacity and still be unsuitable for one steep section of the property. Use the steepest required mowing area as a separate hard filter.
Open lawns and tree-covered properties can place different demands on positioning. Check the actual navigation system, installation requirements and recovery behavior instead of assuming all wire-free mowers work the same way.
A simple selection rule
- Measure mowable area.
- Filter out models whose rated capacity is below that requirement.
- Filter again by slope.
- Check navigation fit for trees, buildings and boundaries.
- Check zones and narrow passages.
- Only then compare price and secondary features.
Common mistake: choosing by acreage alone
Two half-acre lawns can require very different mowers. One may be flat and open; the other may contain a steep rear section, mature trees and a narrow side passage. The correct capacity class is only the beginning of the decision.
